Cooking Poll: How Did You Learn to Cook?

Mundelein, IL, My grandma Jean and her sister. She apparently had a suitcase of pills. Yeah, that's what doctors did for stressed out, suburban housewives in the 50s. - whatchumean via Flickr

  1. Ugh! I’m sleep-replying. I just left a reply at the bottom of the ‘View Results’ page instead of here.

I definitely fall into the category of being self taught.

As a child growing up, we very rarely went out to eat. And while most of the meals we had were ‘home cooked’, they were mainly (and unfortunately) ‘convenience foods’. The freezer was always stocked with t.v. dinners and pot pies. There was always bread and PB and J for quickie sandwiches. What meals were made from scratch were always done solely by her. She didn’t make an effort to include me in food prep so I could watch, help, and learn along the way. Instead, I would be shooed out so she could get things done faster and she could be done with the kitchen duties sooner.

I certainly don’t want to bash my own mother, and apologies if that what this sounds like. I just wish I could say I had some great memories of cooking with her, learning all she knew so I could in turn pass it on to my kids some day. But in reality, I learned more about how to do things in the kitchen from my grandmothers during sleepovers at their houses. I unfortunately lost both of them early though, so I didn’t have nearly as much time to learn from them as I would have liked. :(

    Best wishes on the article!

  3. A nice recpe idea you have here. I am always looking for more ideas to keep the kids entertained with and this one might just do the trick so thank you for sharing it.
